A gas pipe that has been isolated, altered or left unused can contain more than natural gas. Air, residual gas and potentially unsafe mixtures may be present within the pipework. That is why the question of when is gas purging required matters to facilities managers, landlords and duty holders. It is not an optional finishing task - it is a controlled safety procedure that helps ensure a gas installation can be safely commissioned, returned to service or removed.

For commercial premises, particularly schools, occupied buildings and sites with complex pipework, purging must be planned and carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe engineer. The work needs to account for pipe volume, ventilation, ignition sources, occupied areas and the type of gas supply involved.

When is gas purging required?

Gas purging is generally required whenever air or another unsuitable gas may be present in pipework, or when gas needs to be safely removed from it. The purpose is to prevent an unsafe gas-air mixture being introduced into the system or released into the building.

The most common circumstances are after a new gas installation, an extension to existing pipework, a significant alteration, or work that has required sections of the system to be disconnected. Before appliances are commissioned, the newly installed pipework must be cleared of air and safely filled with the correct gas.

Purging may also be required when a supply is being reinstated after isolation. This can apply following major repair work, building refurbishment, a prolonged shutdown or the replacement of gas infrastructure. Simply turning the supply back on is not an acceptable approach where pipework may contain air or where its condition and integrity need to be verified.

At the other end of the process, gas needs to be removed safely from pipework before it is decommissioned, removed or substantially altered. Leaving redundant pipework charged with gas creates an avoidable risk, particularly in buildings where future contractors may encounter it.

New installations and pipework extensions

A new commercial kitchen, boiler plant room, science block, workshop or retail unit may require new gas pipework or an extension from an existing gas main. Before gas appliances can be put into operation, the system must first be tested for soundness and then purged in a controlled manner.

The larger the pipework volume, the more significant the planning requirement becomes. A small appliance connection and a long commercial gas run are not comparable. Larger volumes may require a formal method statement, carefully selected purge points, exclusion controls and monitoring throughout the work.

After repairs, alterations or major maintenance

Repairs can introduce air into the system even where only part of the installation has been opened. Replacing a gas valve, modifying a branch line, renewing corroded sections of pipe or relocating equipment can all affect the section that needs to be purged.

The exact extent depends on how the system has been isolated and what work has taken place. An engineer should establish which sections are affected rather than assuming that only the immediate repair area needs attention. This is especially relevant on older sites where drawings are incomplete or the pipework has evolved through several refurbishment projects.

Before decommissioning or removal

When a boiler, catering appliance, radiant tube heater or redundant gas line is being removed, the gas contained within the pipework must be dealt with safely. The line should then be correctly disconnected, capped or removed as appropriate.

Decommissioning is often overlooked during building alterations. A former kitchen, caretaker's accommodation or teaching area may contain old pipework that has not been properly made safe. Identifying and managing these legacy services protects future maintenance teams and supports accurate building records.

Following suspected contamination or a change of gas

Purging may be necessary if pipework has been contaminated with air, water, debris or the wrong gas. It can also form part of a properly planned conversion between natural gas and LPG, although such work involves much more than changing the fuel supply. Appliance suitability, ventilation, regulators, pipework design and commissioning requirements must all be assessed.

If an appliance is not lighting correctly, gas quality is in doubt or there has been an unplanned interruption to supply, do not assume purging will solve the problem. The installation may have a fault, leak, incorrect pressure or appliance issue that requires diagnosis first.

Why a gas-air mixture is a serious risk

Natural gas and LPG behave differently, but both demand careful control. When gas and air mix within certain proportions, the mixture can be flammable. Releasing gas into an enclosed area, plant room, ceiling void or poorly ventilated service route can create a serious ignition risk.

LPG requires particular caution because it is heavier than air and can collect at low level, including in pits, ducts and basements. Natural gas is lighter than air, but that does not make an uncontrolled release safe. It can accumulate at high level or spread into adjoining spaces.

A safe purge procedure controls where displaced air or gas goes, keeps ignition sources away and confirms the correct end point before appliances are used. It is not the same as opening a connection and allowing gas to escape. That approach is unsafe and may breach legal duties.

Purging is not the same as tightness testing

These terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they serve different purposes. A tightness test checks whether the gas installation is holding pressure and whether there are leaks. Purging removes air or gas from pipework in a controlled way.

Both may be needed during commissioning, but one does not replace the other. A pipe can be sound but still contain air, and a system can be purged but still have a leak. A competent engineer will follow the correct sequence, record relevant results and only place appliances into service once the installation is safe to use.

For commercial properties, the documentation matters. Clear records support maintenance planning, help demonstrate compliance and provide useful information when another contractor works on the system later.

Extra considerations for schools and occupied premises

Schools present a particular set of challenges. Gas services may supply kitchens, laboratories, heating plant rooms, technology rooms or separate buildings across a wider campus. Work often has to be completed outside teaching hours, while safeguarding, access control and minimal disruption remain essential.

A purge should never be treated as routine work that can be squeezed into a busy day without preparation. The engineer needs to understand where pupils, staff, visitors and contractors may be, what adjacent spaces connect to the work area and whether fire alarm, ventilation or site-management arrangements could be affected.

The same principle applies to care settings, offices, retail premises and industrial units. A good plan protects people while allowing necessary repairs and improvements to proceed without unnecessary downtime.

What a professionally managed purge involves

The correct method depends on the gas type, pipe size, pipe length, system layout and location. Engineers should work in line with applicable industry procedures and manufacturer requirements, using suitable test equipment and controls for the installation.

Before work begins, a competent engineer will assess the pipework, isolate the relevant system, consider ventilation and identify safe discharge arrangements. They will also control potential ignition sources and make sure people who could be affected understand the work being undertaken.

The system is then tested and purged using an appropriate, controlled method. Once the correct gas is present at the required point, appliance commissioning and safety checks can take place. The work should be recorded, with any defects, restrictions or follow-up actions clearly explained to the responsible person.

Detailed purge procedures should not be improvised by site staff or general maintenance teams. The risks change quickly with pipe volume and building layout, and what appears to be a simple task can become hazardous without the right training, equipment and planning.

When to call an engineer urgently

If you smell gas, hear escaping gas, suspect damage to a gas main or believe gas may have entered an enclosed area, treat it as an emergency. Do not operate electrical switches, use naked flames or attempt to investigate by opening gas fittings. Move people away from the affected area where it is safe to do so and follow your emergency gas arrangements.

For planned work, involve a Gas Safe engineer early - before builders close ceilings, contractors remove equipment or a new appliance is delivered. Early assessment often avoids redesign, delays and repeat visits.
