It is also sensible to plan maintenance before the autumn rush. Once temperatures fall, engineers are often responding to breakdowns that could have been identified months earlier. Maintenance supports cost control, but replacement still has a place

Well-maintained equipment generally operates more efficiently and is less likely to suffer disruptive failure. Cleaning, correct combustion settings, working controls and good circulation all affect fuel use. However, maintenance cannot make an obsolete or poorly sized system perform like a modern, correctly designed installation.

There comes a point where repeated repairs, unavailable parts, poor efficiency or unreliable operation make replacement the more sensible commercial decision. The answer depends on repair history, expected remaining life, energy costs, occupancy needs and whether the existing system can support future changes to the building. A clear engineering assessment should set out the options honestly rather than pushing replacement where a targeted repair remains appropriate.
